Tonight I was watching a show on PBS about Indiana, and the famous writer Scott Russell Sanders was talking about visiting places that are wild. He said and I don't think I can quote him directly that parents should encourage their children to take risks and go out into the wild.
He made a wonderful point when he said that we have wild inside of us. We have cells and bacteria running through our bodies, and many of them are wild.
After watching that show I started making a cup of my favorite tea. I have been a little depressed lately by the news stories of killings and all the negative news media. Then I remembered what Scott Sanders said, "We all have parts of wild in us."
Can knowing this make us less isolated from neighbors and maybe not be so afraid of someone we pass on the street. Can we learn to open our heart to a homeless person because we know that deep down they are something of a reflection of us. Can we reach out to that rebellous teen and grab their hand or elderly parent and say everything is going to be alright. I am here with you.
We do not need to follow the norm and listen to the rhetoric of the media who trys to seperate and conquer. We do not need to allow politicans to split families and friends into a right group and a wrong group where you are either for us or against us.
We need people who are will to reach out and be reached. For me, at least, that is what it means to be wild.
