I have just started reading this book, but I can already tell it is going to be one that I fill with notes and underlines. Lin Yutang write much wisdom in here, but a couple of my favorite quotes that I have found in just the few short pages I have read are:
"The world, I believe is far too serious, and being far too serious, it has need of a wise merry philosophy." Page 13.
He also write about the scamp. My idea of the scamp would be that of a perhaps nonconformist who challange's authority or the status quo.
"The scamp will be the last and most formidable enemy of dictatorships. He will be the champion of human dignity and individual freedom, and will be the last to be conquered. All modern civilization depends entirely upon him. Page 12.
This book was written in 1996 and published by Harper in New York. As I often do, I was strolling through the Half-priced book store and found this book for around $5. which is a good bargin. The book is well written and is written from a religous and philosophical background.
The author has a message. One of his messages is that we take ourselves way to seriously. That causes us pain, it causes violence, and it causes chaos in our society. I know, I for one have been way too serious, but I can change that behavior in a moment's notice. I can laugh or smile just as easy as cry or frown. Give it a try yourself; it may make you and someone else feel better. I hope you give the book a try to. I can hardly put it down.
