Like the broken tree in this image that I took today that stands isolated and alone, we often feel when we lose something, we are no longer wise or of any use to others. It takes courage in our fast paced culture of percieved perfection to say, I'm not sure or I need to rest, I need more time to think and reflect on this.
Even though perfection does not exist, many of us give away our power to it. We say, well I lost my arm in the war, so I am no longer able to do what I used to do. Or I had a very bad illness and it took something away and changed who I was.
That change can be scary and sting and leave us hanging on for dear life. We can be terrified to take a step because we are not certain whether we are on solid ground or not.
But what I want to stress is that every person carries beauty and wisdom. It is not burried deeply. You can find it if you are gentle with yourself. Many call this in the spiritual realm going through the "dark night of the soul." It does not mean that you did anything wrong.
You simply need to find your roots like the tree and nurture them again. A child who grows up in an abusive home sometimes has to raise him or herself. We all need to learn about self-care. It is easy to remember to take care of others, but we also have needs to.
Remember if you feel your bark starting to get brittle, take a soak in the bathtub. Get out in the sunlight. Taking care of our selves is as much of a responsiblity as a job or going to church.
