I think that self-care has gotten a bad rap lately. People who take care of themselves in our society are often seen as selfish and weak. Men who take care of themselves are often seen as lacking masculinity.
I think it takes personal strength and courage to take care of oneself. I come from a family where the old mantra of "Pull yourself up by the bootstraps" made famous by Horatio Alder was a common theme.
I have learned through many mistakes and many challenging lessons that when I am not taking care of myself, it is really a reflection of what I think of others and of the divine and of the Universe.
Although the Universe seems to have limited resources, beneath the surface we have not begun to see its magnificance. Just like scientists say we have not tapped into only a small part of our brain's potential, I believe that there is much more to the Universe than meets the eye. To prove this, just look into a micorscope lens.
We need to begin to take care of our most precious resources: one another, our universe, and ourselves. Life is all one gigantic gigsaw puzzle that fits together with beauty and grace. Until we begin to love and care for ourselves, we cannot love and care for others, and thus cannot love and care for our world.
Everyday that we awaken to a new sunrise is a Blessing of grace. Even though there is no green leaves on the trees or green grass, beneath the surface there is still life. In springtime that life will thrive again. If we take care of ourselves and each other, we too will survive and thrive. And best of all, we do not have to wait until spring to get started!!!
Blessings
